The original Montezuma’s Revenge was released in 1984 on a variety of 8-bit computers, and the Atari 2600 console. If you’ve done the math(s), you’ll have noticed that the game’s original release was, indeed, 40 years ago.
Indie publishers Eastasiasoft have announced that, in celebration of the game’s 40th anniversary, Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition, which comprises both a 2.5D remake of the game and and also an expanded director’s cut of the original game will be released on Steam later this year.
Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition is also in development for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox, on which it is expected to release in 2025.
Originally developed by Robert Jaeger and released in 1984, Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition resurrects and expands the game to 100 rooms, the total that was originally intended, as well as new 2.5D visuals presented in widescreen HD. Additionally, Robert Jaeger has expanded the original pixel version of his game, complete for the first time and to be made available as a special Director’s Cut.
Physical editions of Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition will be released for Nintendo Switch, with pre-orders opening this Thursday, 10th October, exclusively via Playasia. Only 2000 Limited Editions will be produced and are to include Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition on a Nintendo Switch game card, manual, soundtrack CD and numbered certificate plus the PC version of the expanded retro game Montezuma’s Revenge: Director’s Cut on a custom key-shaped USB drive, all packaged in a collector’s box with newly produced artwork. Standard copies will also be available for pre-order.
