Drova, a new action RPG from developer Just2D, is launching on October 15th 2024 to Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC. The game was announced some time ago and has been in development for many years but has now found a publisher in German-based firm Deck13 Spotlight.
Just2D CEO Christian Sandkämper has been chatting about Drova’s development and gives some insight into what players can expect from this anticipated title. Speaking of the story he explains the player is “In search of a better life, the player ends up in the legendary otherworld of Drova. Unfortunately, this world proves to be increasingly hostile and dangerous. Apart from wild animals and monstrous creatures, there are feuds between the inhabitants of Drova, which escalate more and more.”
“Players create their own character and end up in Drova, more or less by accident.” Christian explains. “There they encounter strange and aggressive wildlife, both above and below ground. Plus, there are the remnants of an ancient civilisation whose ruins are full of secrets… and even more otherworldly horrors. That is apart from all the bandits and other inhabitants out to get you.”
When asked what makes Drova a must-play RPG, Christian says that “the entire world has been handcrafted and offers many opportunities for adventure, treasures, exciting battles and interesting people. Your choices really do matter and the world reacts to you and your actions. Everyone in Drova also has a unique name, a daily routine and a story about why they are in Drova.”
Drova certainly looks the part with its beautiful pixel art and, from the gameplay shown, appears to have all the hallmarks of a classic action RPG. It’s also a great story of how passionate gamers can realise their dreams. Christian finishes up by explaining “as students, we started with a dream – to create an open-world role-playing game. Pretty ambitious for a first project, but we did it. After developing a first demo to show our vision of Drova, we formed a company, found a publisher, moved into the office and… here we are, with a finished game!”
