We previously reported on the Nintendo Switch release of Demon Go! a 2D platform game developed by Korean indie game developer Artifact, and published by indie publisher CFK . And now we’ve had a little time to run through Hell with the Switch version of the game, here are our thoughts on its devilish delights.
Demon Go! was first released on Steam, and on mobiles back in 2022, a couple of years prior to the release of the Switch version that we’re reviewing today, which was released on 8th August this year. But we think it was well worth the wait, as you’ll discover…
In the game, you control a demon who is trying to escape from the bowels of Hell in order to enter cat heaven, but the story really doesn’t matter!
Demon Go! Initially looks like it’s going to be a fairly basic platform game, but it turns out it’s even more basic than it first seems!
Demon Go! Is actually a runner, so all you have to concern yourself with is dashing and jumping at the right times, with the running taken care of for you. To this end, the controls for Demon Go! are incredibly simple. You press the L button to jump, and the R button to dash, and that’s it!
However, don’t be thinking that Demon Go!’s simplicity means that it’s no fun! The game successfully distils the 2D platformer into pure, concentrated gameplay goodness. And just because it’s a simple game, that doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges to be had. You’ll encounter boss fights, have collectibles to amass and achievements to, er, achieve, all of which add to the game’s longevity.
Demon Go!’s graphics are cartoon-like, in a similar vein to games such as Alien Hominid. We know this graphical style can be divisive, but we think it has its place when it’s used well, and it’s used well in Demon Go!
Demon Go!’s soundtrack is effective, if unremarkable, with the fast tempo of the music adding to the urgency of escaping Hell. Another nice touch is that Demon Go! tells you how many attempts you take to clear each level. While this acts as motivation to keep going, it can also be a little dispiriting!
There’s no escaping the fact that Demon Go! Is an incredibly simple game, but it plays well and is a lot of fun. However, we acknowledge that it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and being a runner, it can feel a little like you’re playing a mobile game at times, which makes sense considering it was previously released on iOS and Android.
If you don’t mind games being on the shallow side (and we don’t!) Then you could have a lot of fun with Demon Go! Basically, if you like the sound of a 2D platform runner with very simple controls, then this will be your idea of gaming heaven, otherwise you may well find it hellish.
At less than three quid, it’s well worth jumping and dashing over to the eshop to pick it up, and while there might not be much in the game to motivate replaying it once you’ve finished it, it’s so much pure fun to play that you may well dip into it again every now and then, so Demon Go! really is a hell of a bargain.
