Earlier this week, we told you about Tetris Forever, Digital Eclipse’s forthcoming Tetris-themed entry in their Gold Master series. Tetris Forever was revealed at Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, and since then, more details about the title have dropped, like so many tetronimoes falling from above! Here’s what we know…
Tetris Forever will include more than 90 minutes of all-new documentary featurettes, which explore the lifelong friendship and creative partnership between Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov and The Tetris Company founder Henk Rogers, diving into the fascinating story behind one of the most iconic games in history.
But being part of Digital Eclipse’s Gold Master series means you’ll get to play as well as watch, so Tetris Forever will also include more than 15 playable Tetris games.
The games will include several that are seeing release outside of Japan for the first time, and will also include an accurate recreation of the first version of Tetris on the Electronika 60 computer; the multiplayer Tetris Battle Gaiden; Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss, and more, including an all-new Tetris game: Tetris Time Warp, which has been created by Digital Eclipse.
In the new game, up to four players will warp between different eras of Tetris in real time to experience a variety of different graphic styles and play mechanics through the ages.
Tetris Forever drops on PC via Steam and GOG, and on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4|5, and Xbox One and Series X|S later this year. And while the 1989 Game Boy version is arguably the definitive version of the game, we hope that there will continue to be new versions of Tetris forever!
