Tetris Forever dropping later this year

You may have spotted that Tetris is celebrating its 40th birthday this year, and the latest way this block-busting birthday is being celebrated is with a new compilation of Tetris games, titled Tetris Forever.

But Tetris Forever is no mere compilation of games, it’s the latest entry in Digital Eclipse’s Gold Master series that not only aims to preserve old games and make them playable, but it also aims to provide cultural context around the games via included documentaries.

Tetris Forever will compile more than 15 playable Tetris games, which will include Tetris Battle Gaiden, Super Bombliss, an accurate recreation of the first version of Tetris on the Electronika 60 computer, Hatris, and more. As well as more than 15 playable Tetris games, the compilation will also include all-new documentaries, as is standard for Digital Eclipse’s Gold Master series.

In addition to the Switch version announced at the Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, Tetris Forever will also be released for PC and other console formats.

In addition to the announcement of Tetris Forever, it was also announced that the NES version of Tetris is heading to Nintendo Switch Online later this year. As you may be aware, Tetris on the NES has something of a tumultuous history, with the first port of the game for the console being released by Atari’s Tengen label before it was found to have been released without a proper licence. Nintendo then released their own port of the game for NES.

We certainly hope we’ll be playing Tetris forever!
