Tomba! is a 2.5D platform game that was originally released on PlayStation in Japan in 1997, before receiving an international release in 1998. The game was renamed “Tombi!” in Europe because “tomba” is the Italian word for “grave”.
The game was co-created by Tokuro Fujiwara, who was also heavily involved in several well-loved classic games, most notably for Capcom, such as Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins, Commando, Bionic Commando, Mega Man 2, and Strider. And now, the Fujiwara-produced Tomba! is back in the updated and improved form of Tomba! Special Edition.
Enhancements made to the new edition of the game include the ability to save anywhere or rewind to correct mistakes. There is also a museum crammed with classic print advertisements, original packaging, and manuals. The museum also includes previously unseen dev documents, interviews with the creators, and high-res original artwork. The package is rounded out with a newly remastered soundtrack and a toggle for analogue control.
Those wishing to add this to their physical collections won’t be disappointed. A physical edition of Tomba! Special Edition is available for pre-order via Limited Run Games until 1st September 2024. Alternatively, the digital version of the game (under its Tombi! title on consoles in Europe) is available now on the PS Store, Nintendo eshop, and Steam.
